One stage, four soloists

FourTissimo is a classical crossover ensemble of Israeli musicians: three award-winning instrumentalists and a bass of rare depth, each with an independent solo career behind him.

The programme is built on original arrangements written for this line-up — moving from classical masterpieces and operatic arias through operetta, Broadway and Sinatra, and on to the Hebrew, Yiddish and international songs an audience recognises from the first bar.

An evening with FourTissimo changes colour several times without ever dropping the standard of playing the four musicians bring to it.

Alexander Povolotsky

A graduate of the Odessa Music Academy in Ukraine, Alexander Povolotsky played in the orchestra and in the Violinists’ Ensemble of the Bolshoi Theatre of the USSR and in the USSR National Symphony Orchestra in Moscow.

Since 1991 he has been a violinist of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under Zubin Mehta, and is the founder of the soloists’ ensemble Virtuosi of Tel Aviv. He sat on the jury of the International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition in 2001 and of other international competitions.

A member of the Israel Composers’ Union, he writes and arranges the ensemble’s repertoire.

Alexander Sinelnikov holds a PhD in cello performance from the Rimsky-Korsakov Academy of Music in St. Petersburg, where he went on to teach. He was a member of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra and later of the orchestra of the Kirov Theatre, now the Mariinsky.

He came to Israel in 1990 and joined the chamber ensemble Solanei ha-Galil (The Galilee Soloists), and a few years later the Israel Camerata Jerusalem, where he plays as assistant principal cellist.

He is the founder of the well-known Ir Shalem Trio, and has toured Israel and the world with the orchestra, with the trio and as an independent performer.

Born in Kyiv, Vladimir Zaitsev emigrated to the United States, where he graduated from the Mannes College of Music in New York as a student of Nadia Reisenberg. He continued privately with Alexander Edelman and studied in Rome with Guido Agosti.

His awards include the Julius Katchen Memorial Award at the Frina Awerbuch International Piano Competition, first prizes at the Liederkranz Foundation International Piano Competition and the Five Towns Music and Arts Foundation Competition, second prize at the New York Chopin Competition, the Ferruccio Busoni Society of New York Performance Award and the Distinguished Artist Award of Artists’ International Auditions.

He made his Carnegie Hall debut with Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto and appeared in the Town Hall Select Debut Series in New York. He now lives and performs in Israel.

Lev Elgardt

A graduate of the St. Petersburg State Conservatory and of the Mariinsky Theatre’s Academy of Young Singers, Lev Elgardt went on to sing as a soloist of the Mariinsky Theatre. His is the rare voice type the ensemble is built around — a genuine basso profundo.

In 2015, he appeared at the BBC Proms at London’s Royal Albert Hall in Shostakovich’s Orango, performing with the Philharmonia Orchestra under Esa-Pekka Salonen.

In Israel he has appeared with the Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv, in Sadko, and in opera productions in Jerusalem. His roles include Gremin in Eugene Onegin, Zuniga in Carmen, Masetto in Don Giovanni, Don Fernando in Fidelio, Geronte in Manon Lescaut and Filiberto in Il signor Bruschino.

He holds the Grand Prix of the Golden Hanukkah international vocal competition in Berlin and is a laureate of further international competitions. Alongside opera he sings jazz, and took part in the television project The Voice.
